Space (Tribute 21) recognizes Carl Sagan’s (1934–1996) illustrious career as an astronomer and astrophysicist. One of his many roles included working with NASA’s Apollo program, which sent astronauts to the moon. Rauschenberg may have been introduced to Sagan’s work through his own Stoned Moon series, a portfolio of prints that chronicles the Apollo 11 mission. This brochure pairs Rauschenberg’s Space (Tribute 21) with a quote by Sagan that reads: “To make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.”
