In this early view of Rauschenberg’s Trophy IV (for John Cage) (1961), the flashlight now chained to the sculpture’s metal pole is absent. The image comes from a slide in the files of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, on which the date 1961 is written in pencil. The flashlight was added sometime between 1961 and 1980, when the work was included in an exhibition at the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Berlin, titled Rauschenberg: Werke 1950–1980 (March 23–May 4, 1980).
