Felandus Thames, You talkin bout practice

Floor 7, Zone 5

This floor-to-ceiling work depicting basketball star Allen Iverson is one of eleven new artworks in the exhibition. Artist Felandus Thames implements hair beads as a “Black pixel.”

“I have been re-authoring the images from my childhood with intentions of removing the ‘white male gaze’ that’s associated with the history of photography,” Thames says.

Maurizio Cattelan, Stadium

Floor 7, Zone 2

Time to start recruiting — we invite you to play this twenty-two-person foosball table. Cattelan first unveiled this monumental interactive sculpture in Italy to critique a wave of heightened anti-immigrant sentiment in the country, sponsoring a team of North African migrants that faced off against a largely white Italian team in a game of foosball.

Paul Pfeiffer, Caryatid (Pacquiao)

Floor 7, Zone 5

Watch a boxing match you really feel. Pfeiffer edited footage of a professional boxing match featuring Manny Pacquiao to remove his opponent, making impact the object of focus. The results surprised Pfeiffer: “I didn’t expect that there would be something so visceral about seeing a body receiving that impact.”

Anna Park, double tap

Floor 7, Zone 3

This artwork has perfect comedic timing. Done in charcoal, Double Tap radiates with energy. “My obsession with [charcoal] only grew the more I was drawing with it,” says Park. “The limitations of the medium, color, and texture gave me boundaries that I could explore.”

Jasko Begovic (Sko Habibi), HumanE.T. collection for the Oakland Roots soccer team

Floor 7, Zone 4

Sko Habibi playfully refashions the Oakland Roots soccer team’s uniform to celebrate both individual identity and collective freedom. Reflecting on his personal history as a Bosnian refugee and street artist, he credits soccer with giving him a sense of belonging: “It saved my life.”

Jeffrey Gibson, THE POWER WITHIN

Floor 7, Zone 1

Gibson was ready to give up on being an artist when he discovered that the punching bag could be his new canvas. “[I could] embrace textiles and adornment and the decorative without feeling the boundary of what art is perceived to be,” he said in a 2019 interview.
