Adrian Ghenie: Painting a dictator in the moment before his execution

While Nicolae Ceausescu, the last Communist leader in Romania, was in power, scores of portraits of him were commissioned. Artist Adrian Ghenie says they're all awful. For his work The Trial (2010), which depicts Ceausescu and his wife moments before they were shot to death on national television on December 25, 1989, he says he wanted to create a portrait that showed Ceausescu in a new light.
