Watch as artist Amalia Mesa-Bains walks through the installation of her work, Venus Envy, Chapter I: The First Holy Communion Moments Before the End (1993/2022). Recently added to SFMOMA’s collection, this project is made up of autobiographical materials like photographs, clothing, and objects that draw from the artist’s experience growing up Catholic. Mesa-Bains transforms the entire space of the gallery to investigate the processes through which personal and collective identity are shaped, experienced, and affirmed.
