Thompson employed rational systems of visualization used in science, technology, and economics to create this painting. The colors were derived from a computer-generated algorithm. To determine the composition, Thompson constructed a Hamiltonian path through a grid on the canvas; this type of path passes through each vertex, or intersection of lines, exactly once, without crossing over itself. He then transposed the colors to the path, such that “step one in the color list move[d] to position one of the path.”
