description of Symbolic Landscape by Diego Rivera

This four foot tall, five foot wide oil painting depicts a large driftwood tree trunk lying on the rocky foothills of a gray stone mountain. The blonde driftwood emerges from our lower right hand corner and undulates toward the upper left. The smooth, orange-tinted wood is largely free of bark, and has been rendered with a soft, fleshy quality. The body of the trunk and knotty limbs in the upper left strongly resemble a naked woman arching her back with her arms above her head. On either side of the trunk are gray boulders which take the form of two large clenched fists. Near the lower left is a face with bared teeth carved into a rock, staring up at the sky. Resting on the face is a stained leather glove and a bloody dagger with a gold ring encircling the blade. At the upper right, in the crisp blue sky, a full moon hangs overhead.
