When SFMOMA acquired Rauschenberg’s Pyramid Series in 1998, curator Gary Garrels wrote to the artist to confirm how the works should be installed. The handwritten note that Rauschenberg added to the letter and returned to Garrels by fax indicates that there was no set order and that the installation should respond to the space where the drawings would be displayed. As he instructed Garrels: “Play by eye.”
