About the Artists
Alphabet Rockers create music that sparks change and builds a culture of belonging. Led by visionary artists Kaitlin McGaw (she/her) and Tommy Soulati Shepherd (he/him/they), the GRAMMY-winning group centers youth voices to inspire inclusion, equity, and justice through hip-hop and storytelling. With a 15-year legacy and over 5 million listeners, they are also celebrated children’s book authors, keynote speakers, and media creators.
As resident artists with the Othering & Belonging Institute, Destiny Arts Center, Hiiwav Black Music Incubator, and Lawrence Hall of Science, Alphabet Rockers bring together research, lived experience, and artistic excellence. Their collaborative practice is grounded in McGaw’s background in African American Studies from Harvard and Shepherd’s training in theater from the Pacific Conservatory. Through music, performance, and partnership, Alphabet Rockers uplift diverse voices and redefine what it means to make media for — and with — young people.
Kati Hernández, a native of Cuba, is a prominent figure in the dance community, sharing the richness of her Afro-Cuban heritage through diverse forms of Cuban dance. From an early age, she toured internationally with Cuban artists across Europe, the Caribbean, and the Americas, establishing herself as a versatile performer and choreographer. Now based in Los Angeles, Kati received the Community Leader of Excellence 2023 award for her artistic contributions. She created the acclaimed Oricha Dance Therapy program, which highlights a holistic approach to Afro-Cuban rhythms, movements, and storytelling. As the founder of Kimbambula Cuban Dance and Music Ensemble, she promotes Cuban culture and fosters cross-cultural connections. Kati has collaborated with venues like the Ford Theater, Getty Museum, and Walt Disney Concert Hall. Additionally, she acted in the short film 72 and participated in Spotify’s Afro Latino campaign, Una Comunidad en Movimiento, showcased in Times Square.
