Kahlo experienced the United States largely through three cities: Detroit, New York, and San Francisco. Each location was a setting for key events in her life: a miscarriage in Detroit that led to the iconic painting Henry Ford Hospital, her first solo exhibition in Julian Levy’s influential New York gallery, and her remarriage to Diego Rivera in San Francisco. This program goes beyond a simple time line to discuss the resonance of these American places with Kahlo’s work and reputation.
