Western society has been moving more quickly since the advent of industrialization. A number of artists, however, have chosen to resist this trend, making works that reflect intense labor or meditation, or that take duration as their subject. McDowell explores this topic with a discussion of works by artists such as Vija Celmins, Agnes Martin, and filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky.
