One of Jarman’s last films, The Garden follows the story of a gay couple who face public ridicule, humiliation, and death. Intertwined with the couple’s trials are classic religious symbolism (the Madonna, Jesus) and modern day realities (paparazzi, consumerism). In this way, the plight of Jesus is likened to the plight of gay people in modern English society.
