New Work

For his first major museum commission in the United States, Vienna-based artist Markus Schinwald (b. 1973) presents a site-responsive installation that fills the galleries of the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts. Schinwald’s architectural intervention acts as a prosthesis that changes the physical and psychological potential of the space and provides a display apparatus for altered 19th-century paintings and wooden sculptures created from the legs of Chippendale-style tables. Jointly organized by the Wattis and SFMOMA, this exhibition is part of SFMOMA’s New Work series, which provides a platform for artists to develop or premiere a body of work or present existing work in a new context.

Markus Schinwald is jointly organized by the CCA Wattis Institute and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
