This installment of the New Work series features monochromatic paintings by Rick Arnitz. The Bay Area-based artist’s tool of choice is the paint roller half-dipped in enamel, used to form cloudy, linear bands or fluid, wavelike patterns. Though nonrepresentational, Arnitz’s painterly compositions recall the rippled surfaces of seashores or wind-striated sand dunes. Illusionistic painted frames often distance their contents from viewers, rendering these recent works both mesmerizing and disturbing.
