Primary Matters

The Minimalist Sensibility, 1959 to the Present
November 8, 2003–January 11, 2004

Minimalism has been characterized by the use of new materials; an engagement with architecture, seriality, and scale; and an emphasis on the relationship between art object, gallery space, and spectator. Primary Matters illustrates how these strategies have been adopted by a range of artists over the past few decades. The exhibition features paintings, sculptures, and installations from the SFMOMA collection, including Richard Serra’s Gutter Corner Splash: Night Shift and works by Jo Baer, Dan Flavin, and Carlos Mollura.
