In 1998, longtime SFMOMA benefactor Phyllis Wattis provided major support for the museum’s acquisition of fourteen artworks by Rauschenberg. This photograph shows Wattis and Rauschenberg in front of Port of Entry [Anagram (A Pun)] (1998) during Robert Rauschenberg (May 7–September 7, 1999), an exhibition highlighting those acquisitions. Rauschenberg later donated Hiccups to SFMOMA in honor of Mrs. Wattis’s spirit and generosity.
