This tack board from Rauschenberg’s Captiva Island studio is covered with photographs, sketches, and other materials used to produce Hiccups (1978) and the series Spreads (1975–83) and Scales (1977–81). Near the center of the top edge of the photograph, two sheets of paper with a zipper are pinned to the wall, an early test for the construction of Hiccups. Also visible are a photograph of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, a reproduction of Johannes Vermeer’s Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window (1657–59), a tea strainer, and two combs—miscellany that caught Rauschenberg’s attention, provided raw material, or acted as points of reference for his work.
