Group Visits FAQ
What do you consider a “group” and what is the group discount?
A “group” is 10 or more people. To qualify for a group discount, you must purchase at least 10 tickets (not including free admission for SFMOMA members or visitors 18 and under). If you are interested in bringing a group of students, check out For Educators to learn more about our free education programs.

How do I book group tickets and/or a private guided tour?
Group ticketing can be reserved through Tickets (for groups of 10–20 people); the group discount is automatically applied. For groups of 21 or more, and/or to reserve a private guided tour, submit a request through Group Visits. You will receive a response within a week with availability and final booking details.
How far in advance do I need to book a tour?
Private guided tours require booking at least two weeks in advance; however, we highly recommend booking further out to ensure you receive your preferred visit date.
When is payment needed for a private guided tour or group ticketing?
Payment is required at the time of booking to guarantee a reservation. If you’re unsure of your final head count, you may place a nonrefundable 25% deposit, which allows you to make changes up to two weeks prior to your arrival. All reservations and purchases are final, so we suggest having your final date and head count ready before booking. More information can be found in our Group Sales Policy.
How long is a private guided tour, and what is the cost to extend it?
All of our private guided tours are 1 hour in length. Tours can be extended in 1 hour increments for an additional flat fee of $200/hour, per private guide (or $100/hour for SFMOMA Member groups).
Can my group arrive before the tour, or stay afterward?
Your group admission is valid all day. However, we highly recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before your tour start time. Following your tour, you are welcome to stay until closing. If you need a break, your admission allows reentry.
Can I book a private guided tour with less than 10 people?
Yes! There is no minimum number of people required for a private tour. Please note, there is a minimum payment of $340 required for all group tours (or $250 for SFMOMA member groups.)
What private guided tour options are available for booking?
SFMOMA currently offers the following private guided tour options (with special exhibition tours on rotation).
Painting and Sculpture Collection
The Painting and Sculpture Collection Tour is an exploration of iconic artworks located in our Floor 2 galleries, including paintings, sculpture, and works on paper from the early 1900s to the present. Experience the beginning of artistic modernity and see how colors, shapes, and materials shifted rapidly at the turn of the century. Take a closer look at the foundations of the museum’s collection and find out how SFMOMA earned its title as the first West Coast museum dedicated to modern art. Notable artworks include Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain (1917/1964) and Mark Rothko’s No. 14, 1960.
Doris and Donald Fisher Collection
The tour of the Doris and Donald Fisher Collection at SFMOMA guides visitors through the Fisher Collection galleries, located throughout the building. Founders of San Francisco-based Gap, Inc., the Fishers have had a lifelong love of modern and contemporary art, which shines through in multiple exhibitions drawn from their holdings. Select additional works from the museum’s collection add depth and context. Notable stops include the focused exhibition Alexander Calder: Scaling Up, four galleries dedicated to Ellsworth Kelly, and the diverse works of Gerhard Richter.
The SFMOMA Architecture Tour guides visitors through the Snøhetta-designed expansion of the new SFMOMA building—from inspiration to construction—and the challenges faced in designing what is now the largest museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art in the United States. Groups will explore the three-year transformation of SFMOMA through its expanded gallery spaces, outdoor terraces, and environmentally conscious design. Highlights of this tour include Helen and Charles Schwab Hall on Floor 2, the living wall on Floor 3, and unique views of San Francisco from our multiple terraces.
The SFMOMA Highlights Tour provides an overview of the museum and its treasured pieces. With 170,000 square feet of gallery space, SFMOMA is a multi-visit destination boasting an outstanding collection of modern and contemporary artworks, all showcased by the inspiring architecture of Mario Botta and Snøhetta. Visitors will explore must-see artworks, conquer the heights of the oculus bridge, breathe in the living wall, and admire the breathtaking beauty of our multiple outdoor terraces.
Is there a private tour discount for members?
SFMOMA members may use their free admission when booking a group tour. SFMOMA members within the group only need to pay the per-person tour fee. We do ask that members secure admission on their own (online, onsite, or by phone).
How do I book a group visit and/or private guided tour if my company is a corporate member?
Some corporate members receive free admission and/or private guided tour perks. Please check in with your SFMOMA corporate member contact or visit Corporate Engagement to learn more.
