FAQ: Private Guided Tours

Thank you for considering booking a private group tour to SFMOMA! If you don’t see your question below, please reach out to groups@sfmoma.org or call 415.357.4197 for assistance.

How can I book a private tour?

Please complete the Private Tour Request Form to request a private tour.

Online booking for a private tour is a request. An email will be sent when guide availability is confirmed, and payment is due within three business days. Once payment has been processed, your order is complete.

Group discount rates apply to 10 or more paying guests for general admission only.

Does the cost of my private tour include my general admission ticket?

No. There is a $350 guide fee for Ruth Asawa: Retrospective private tours, plus the cost of special exhibition tickets, or a $250 guide fee for other private tours, plus the cost of general admission tickets.

What if I'm a member?

SFMOMA members may use their free admission benefits when booking or participating in a private tour. Member details must be provided prior to payment.

On your registration form, please list the names and membership numbers of the SFMOMA members who will be participating in your private tour.

How much are children's tickets?

Museum admission is free for all visitors 18 and younger. This applies to tours as well.

How long is a private tour for?

Tours are one hour in length. Groups may enter the museum prior to the tour’s start time and are welcome to stay in the museum until closing.

What time should I arrive for check in?

Your private tour has a reserved start time. Please allow at least 30 minutes before your reserved time to check in and pick up tickets so you are ready to enter the galleries at your reserved time.

The group leader is responsible for ticket pickup and distribution at Ticketing on Floor 2. We are unable to hold tickets for late arrivals.

What if I am running late?

Your tour guide may have to provide an abbreviated tour if you arrive late.

If you arrive more than 30 minutes late, we cannot guarantee we can provide your private guided tour and you forfeit the cost of the tour.

What happens if I need to make changes to my prebooked tour?

Tours are neither refundable nor exchangeable and must be fully paid within three business days after availability is confirmed. You may add tickets based on availability no later than 14 days before your tour date.

Who will be my guide?

SFMOMA private tour guides are professional art historians.

Our goal is to make your group feel closer to the artists and artworks featured in the exhibition.

Please note only SFMOMA staff are authorized to speak to groups and provide tours. Outside lectures and tour groups are not allowed.

Are language and accessibility accommodations available?

All tours are conducted in English. Some SFMOMA tour guides are fluent in other languages and may be scheduled pending availability.

All tours that occur during museum hours will use assistive listening devices and induction loops.

Please note that our tours involve extensive walking, standing, and moving between floors. Cane chairs and wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If anyone in your group requires additional accessibility support, please let us know on your registration form, contact us at groups@sfmoma.org, or call 415.357.4197.

Can I book a dining experience for my group?
