Artist Talk: Wendy Red Star

Artist Wendy Red Star joins Shana Lopes, assistant curator of photography at SFMOMA, for a wide-ranging interview about the artist’s practice, including Red Star’s series “Four Seasons,” on view through August 21, 2022, in the exhibition “Constellations: Photographs in Dialogue.”

Raised on the Apsáalooke (Crow) reservation in Montana, Wendy Red Star’s work is informed both by her cultural heritage and her engagement with many forms of creative expression, including photography, sculpture, video, fiber arts, and performance. An avid researcher of archives and historical narratives, Red Star seeks to incorporate and recast her research, offering new and unexpected perspectives in work that is at once inquisitive, witty, and unsettling. Previous exhibitions include “Wendy Red Star: A Scratch on the Earth” at the San Antonio Museum of Art, and “Wendy Red Star: American Progress” at the Anderson Collection at Stanford University.

This online talk with Red Star and Lopes took place on May 26, 2022 at 6 p.m.
