SAN FRANCISCO, CA (May 10, 2023)—The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) announces the launch of a new artist membership program—among the first of its kind offered by a U.S. art museum. With proof of professional art practice, working artists can receive a $40 discount on SFMOMA membership, the largest membership discount that SFMOMA currently offers.

“Artists are a vibrant core of all we do at SFMOMA—from exhibitions to education to special events,” said Christopher Bedford, Helen and Charles Schwab Director of SFMOMA. “I am grateful to launch our new working artist membership program to help increase critical access for practicing artists, to foster meaningful engagement, and to serve as a resource for our creative community.”

“As a Bay Area artist and Trustee of SFMOMA, I know how critical local artists are to the museum and in turn how important the museum is to local artists,” added Tucker Nichols. “I see this new kind of membership as an invitation to the artist community to come in and take a look—for a whole afternoon or for a few minutes to sit in front of a favorite painting. The museum is constantly changing, and this program will encourage artists to come frequently and engage actively. I’ve long hoped for a program like this at a major Bay Area arts institution and it’s great to see it come to fruition.”

SFMOMA’s new working artist membership discount was soft-launched in April and is available now to qualified artists. With this discount, actively practicing artists may choose from SFMOMA membership at the Individual level (artist rate of $80/year) or Dual level (artist rate of $140/year).

Artists can redeem their discount by completing the Working Artist Membership Application Form online where applicants will be asked to show proof of their active, professional art practice. More information can be found in an FAQ specifically created for this membership program. Artists may also contact artistmembership@sfmoma.org with any questions about membership.

Those with a working artist membership receive full benefits offered to non-working artist members at the same level. Among the benefits of SFMOMA membership are free museum admission for the member and one accompanied guest for one year; discounts at all SFMOMA restaurants; 10 percent off Museum Store purchases; members-only preview days and parties; 25 percent off daily parking in the SFMOMA garage; and subscription to member publications.

Details about all SFMOMA membership levels and discounts can be found at sfmoma.org/membership/.

SFMOMA also encourages increased museum access through Free Family Days (which provides free admission for up to four adults accompanying a visitor 18 and younger),First Thursdays (which offers free admission to residents of all nine Bay Area counties) and regular Free Community Days. Museum admission is always free for visitors 18 years of age and younger. More information about free days, deals and discounts for general admission can be found here.
