Ishiuchi Miyako’s early life near Yokosuka’s U.S. military base

Photographer Miyako Ishiuchi recalls growing up in Yokosuka, Japan, where a United States naval base was located during World War II. She describes living in an area that was often unsafe for women; shooting her series, Yokosuka Story (1976–77); and finding her way in the male-dominated field of photography in the 1970s.
